“Be not like a horse or a mule…”

I’m using Kathleen Buswell Nielson’s Psalms study as a guide in my personal devotions. A week or two ago I worked through Psalm 32 on the blessings of forgiveness. The psalm makes a point about being teachable that is sticking with me:

I will instruct you and teach you in the way
you should go;
I will counsel you with my eye upon you.
Be not like a horse or a mule, without
which must be curbed with bit and bridle,
or it will not stay near you.

God promises to instruct, teach, counsel, and watch over us. And then He warns us not to be stubborn mules who have to be bridled and pulled tight on reins — because He knows us well.

I’ve had to be “curbed with bit and bridle” too many times to count. Oh, to quickly believe God’s promises to instruct and teach me in the way I should go!

Lord, I believe. Help my unbelief!
