From The Quiet Place: Daily Devotional Readings by Nancy Leigh DeMoss:
“I glorified you on earth, having accomplished the work that you gave me to do.” — John 17:4
Rarely can I say at the end of the day that I have completed the work I set out to do that day. To the contrary, I frequently drop into bed at night with a long, mental list of the unfinished tasks I had hoped to take care of that day. All of which makes me wonder: How was it possible for Jesus to finish His life’s work — the entire plan of redemption — in such a short period of time, only a few years? Talk about a to-do list!
We find a clue in Jesus’ own words — a powerful truth that sets us free from the bondage of stress and frustration about all the things we have to do. Notice what work Jesus completed: “the work that you [His Father] gave me to do.” That is the secret. Jesus didn’t finish everything His disciples wanted Him to do, or everything the multitudes wanted Him to do. But He did finish the work that God gave Him to do.
There will seldom be enough time in a twenty-four-hour day for you to do everything that is on your to-do list. For sure, there will never be enough time for everything that is on everyone else’s list for your life! You can’t spend time with every person who wants to talk, read all the books you’d like, and tackle every project you’re interested in, all while keeping every room in your home presentable for guest who might drop by.
But what a relief to realize you don’t have to. All you have to do is the work God assigns to you. And believe it or not, there is always time (and grace) to do everything that is on His to-do list for you.
Ask God to give you wisdom to know what is on His agenda for you to do today, and to give you the ability to say no to “good things” that He has not assigned to you at this time.
