random thoughts

~ I finally arranged the books on my living room shelves by color. I like it.

books-by-color

~ Dark chocolate peanut butter cups. Oh my.

~ Things I don’t care about:

  1. DC or Marvel comics or the movies inspired by them.
  2. Game of Thrones
  3. the NFL

~ Am I the only one who hates to find that the “article” you clicked on is really a video? That annoys me to no end — especially when it’s autoplay.

~ I should not have chips in my house. Ever.

That’s it, y’all. Care to share any of your random thoughts?

~ Yeah, I know it’s not cool for real book lovers to like e-books, but since when have I been cool? I love reading a book on my iPad after the lights are out. And I can pull that same book up on my phone when I’m stuck somewhere. I can highlight passages and make notes and easily access all of that in one place on my laptop. It’s a great time to be alive, if you ask me.

~ I’ve long lamented slow drivers in the left lane, but I’m growing more and more annoyed with drivers who aren’t looking ahead and making lane changes accordingly. Why race up behind a slow driver and then cut in front of someone when you can move over a little earlier and keep traffic flowing smoothly?

~ I’m oh so pleasantly surprised when the barista spells my name Anne-with-an-e without even asking. And when people do ask, I’m even more impressed. Yes, it’s with an e, thank you very much.

~ I have a problem with my shoulder that has affected my entire right arm, so I haven’t been able to knit in over a week. This is seriously cramping my style. I’m seeing someone about it today, and I’m hoping for relief.

~ More and more these days, I’m enjoying silence. Reading in a quiet house? Bliss.

~ If you use the last of the toilet paper, please replace. Thanks ever so much.*

~ If you’re not reading the G-file every week, you should be.

~ I recently finished Boy’s Life, and, boy, was it good! Not my usual genre, but the writing is stellar.

~ It’s been a really long, hard week with very little sleep. If you’re a good sleeper, say a prayer of thanksgiving to God today.

*If I were in academia, I would obtain a grant to conduct extensive research into the psychopathic personality that uses the last of the toilet paper without replacing the roll.

Happy Saturday folks!

~ Taking a photo of cars (license plates) going slow in the left lane and then posting them to a website: If this is not a thing, it should be. Let’s out these inconsiderate, oblivious menaces to good order.

~ Really, my commute is very easy. But some days it’s a battle.

~ Those little chocolate chip cookies from Trader Joe’s. Totally addicting.

~ Tieks are awesome. I finally got a pair, and they feel so good. Yes, they’re pricey, but I’ve learned that the shoes I spend money on last me a lot longer than cheap ones. And the older I get, the less I’m willing to tolerate uncomfortable shoes. Modern Mrs. Darcy’s recent review is what prompted me to finally try a pair.

~ Every year around this time, I vow to do my Christmas shopping throughout the following year so I don’t get myself into the same old mess. One day I’ll learn.

~ Some people are very difficult to buy for. (Yes, I ended that with a preposition. It happens.)

Gotta run,

~ It really rubs me the wrong way when I hear the word ‘gift’ used as a verb. What’s wrong with ‘give’?

~ I’m listening to rain falling, and it’s a sweet, sweet sound.

~ I’m listening to my husband snoring, and while it’s not a sweet sound, he’s a sweet man, and I’m glad he’s mine.

~ 2016 has whizzed by faster than any year I can remember, and it’s also been one of the weirdest.

~ I’m in a bit of a reading rut, but that’s okay because I’m on a knitting binge. If I could just figure out how to do both at the same time, I’d be in hobby heaven.

~ I rarely use my laptop anymore except to blog. I love my iPad. So this seems like an awesome idea.

~ Are any of you watching This Is Us? I’m really enjoying it. It’s filling the Parenthood void in my life.

Gotta get back to my knitting!

random thoughts

~ A peeve: internet recipes with a 1,000 word essay and 75 pictures BEFORE the ingredients and instructions are revealed. I *might* want to go through all of that AFTER I determine if the recipe looks like something I can (or want to) manage and if the ingredients are readily available and don’t contain something nasty like curry powder.

~ Thank you, Jesus, for Tylenol PM.

~ When I started knitting about two years ago, my reading life suffered. This summer, our move disrupted my knitting, but my reading life prospered. Now I’ve picked up the needles again and am hoping for some balance.

~ I recently got an Amazon Dash button. It’s pretty cool.

~ A line from A Three Dog Life that has me thinking: “What are you doing?” Paul asks. “I’m taking a poll,” I say. “What is the one thing that stays stable in your life?”

What is the one thing that stays stable in your life?

~ I cannot wait until this election cycle is over. Campaign signs have taken over Tallahassee, and they’re an eyesore.

~ Sometimes I think I might sound like an old lady.

~ That could be because I’m in a season of poor sleep. Last night I took the aforementioned Tylenol PM because I had a terrible headache that would not let up. But then a big thunderstorm rolled through after midnight and kept me awake for a while. And then just a few minutes later, it was time to get up.

Off to work now. Feel free to share your random thoughts in the comments. 🙂

~ Coconut milk ice cream, y’all.

~ I’m spending less and less time on Facebook these days. It’s no longer a place where friends share tidbits from their lives. It’s become a chaotic mix of links, complaints about politics, likes, “which _____ am I?” quizzes, and home-based businesses.

~ Instagram and Twitter are my favorite social media hangouts these days. Will has encouraged me to get into Snapchat, but I feel like an old lady trying to hang out with the yutes there.

~ I recently watched two good movies on Netflix: Spotlight and The Big Short.

~ We’re pretty much settled into our new house, but we still have some more boxes to retrieve from storage. Stuff is less and less appealing to me, and I’ve been quite inclined to get rid of things I haven’t used or even thought about in a long time. This past weekend, I texted photos of items to my kids and let them claim what they wanted. I’ve got two boxes in the garage all ready to take to them.

~ Speaking of our new house, I love it. Everything is easier in this space — even laundry. And everything is fresh and clean — a literal fresh start. I especially love cooking in my new kitchen.

~ Cookin’ with gas! I made this One Pot Chicken Risotto recently, and it’s a do-over. And this Low Carb Baked Chicken and Cauliflower Rice was yummy, too. I used Trader Joe’s Organic Riced Cauliflower.

~ I had a moment of panic on the treadmill at the gym the other night — I thought I might have actually been singing out loud. I didn’t seem to get any weird looks, so maybe not. Whew!

~ Why, oh, why don’t employers and managers teach their staff to say “Thank you,” to customers? It annoys me to no end to say thank you to a cashier as she hands me the receipt and hear her say, “No prob.” Chick-Fil-A has the proper response down so I know it’s possible to teach this concept.

~ You know what’s sad? Ordering an unsweet tea in a drive-thru, paying, and driving away, only to taste the tea and find that it’s sweet! Blech.

~ Somehow over the course of this month, I’ve turned into a person who enjoys walking for exercise. Sometimes I walk on the treadmill at the gym, but Paul and I have also tried to walk in different parks and neighborhoods. It keeps it interesting and feels like exploring.

~ My alma mater is pretty cool.

~ Will gave me an Amazon gift card as a combo birthday/Mother’s Day gift. I had so much fun choosing books from my wishlist last night. When they arrive tomorrow it will be like another birthday.

~ Today Paul and I have taken the day off, and we’re just going to take it easy, go to breakfast, maybe see a movie, whatever we want! And tonight I have a birthday celebration with my family. Anne Week continues! 🙂

Happy Friday!

~ Watching the National Championship game, and as I always say: “Go Tigers! Beat Bama!”

~ Cold weather has finally come to the Deep South. A day or two of that is really all I need.

~ I think I could eat salmon every day.

~ 5 years ago, yesterday, I got up in the middle of the night in Rome, Italy, to watch Auburn win a National Championship. That was fun, y’all.

~ This cracks me up:

~ Reading is a real pleasure for me again. Thanks, 2016 reading challenge!

~ Will says I should be using Snapchat. I got the app, but I really have no idea what to do with it or why.

random thoughts: year-end edition

~ Lately I’ve been thinking about making some changes to simplify my life. I’m not sure exactly what those changes will be, but I’m feeling the need to declutter and cast off burdens. We’ve likely got another move during 2016, and that’s good motivation to get rid of stuff.

~ I’m not big on new year’s resolutions, but in 2016 I am planning to do another 365 photo project (actually a 366 because 2016 is a leap year) — this time via instagram. It will be my third 365 (a photo a day for a year).

~ I’ve been thinking about doing some kind of intentional reading project, too. Still mulling that one over. I definitely want to read more fiction from my own shelves.

~ Since sleep remains elusive, I should be making better use of that time from around 3 to when my alarm goes off at 5:30. I try to pray, and then I end up thinking about all kinds of things (work, relationships, the fact that I should be sleeping…). I “take [myself ]in hand” and try to pray again and then my mind wanders. It’s really sad. Eventually I pick up my phone or iPad and check emails, social media, and the news. Then I drag myself out of bed and get on with the day. There has to be a better way.

~ I’m amazed that anyone could choose a design or saying to be emblazoned on their flesh forever. It’s a major decision for me to pick out my yearly planner/calendar! This year I went with Moleskine again. Tried and true.

~ It was a rather pitiful reading year for me, but I’ll try to do a round up of my favorite books of 2015 before the new year rolls ’round.

Happy New Year, y’all,

~ The only thing worse than a driver who doesn’t use her turn signal is one who uses the right blinker for a left turn.

~ A Smart car with only one working headlight, is, well, not so smart.

~ I know I’ve mentioned this before — more than once — but slow drivers in the left lane make me C.R.A.Z.Y.

~ Sorry for the traffic rants, but I spend a lot of time on the road these days. Really, I have the easiest of commutes, but there are some days on the road that are harder than others.

~ I realized long ago that manicures are a waste of money for me. I manage to chip my nails almost immediately. Gel manicures last longer, but they destroy my usually healthy nails. I’ve recently discovered Sally Hansen Miracle Gel polish. It doesn’t require the UV light, and so far, one application (two coats of the color and one of the top coat) lasts about 8 days without chipping. And it dries pretty quickly without smudges.

~ I’m so glad this football season is over. Yes, we have the bowl in Birmingham, but that’s so lame that I’m pretending it’s over.

~ If we have chips in the house (chips that I actually like), I am powerless to say no to them. Hi. I’m Anne, and I cannot say no to chips. Or homemade cookies.

~ I came across Speculoos Cookie Butter Cheesecake at Trader Joe’s this past weekend. I did not purchase this wonder of wonders because if it’s in our house I will eat it.

~ When I lived in Belgium, I concocted a cheesecake (cheesecakes are my go-to desserts to make and take)  with dark chocolate and a Speculoos crust.

~ While I was typing the random thought above, I was eating chips.

~ I’ve been binging on Fixer Upper lately. And I just want to take out walls and rid the world of popcorn ceilings.

~ While I was typing the random thought above, I was eating chips.
